The Photograph as an Art Form - Sat. Feb 23 & Mar. 2, 2019 - Fergus

artphotoSaturdays, Feb. 23 & Mar. 2, 2019   1:00 to 4:00 pm

Location: 198 St. David St., Fergus

For ages 16+

Photography has a long history as an art form, but is one that is often misunderstood when considering it's place in the greater world of art.  How does it fit in when considered with painting or sculpture or other media?  How do we know when a photograph is simply a snapshot, or something more compelling?

This course is an excellent lead into the annual Contact Photography Festival held in Toronto in May 2019.

In this new course, we will examine these questions.  We'll look at the evolution of photography through different genres, and learn how to evaluate our own images in terms of artistic merit rather than as a purely technical endeavour.

Week 1  will include a discussion on photography's place in the art world and how it compares to other art forms.  We'll discuss how to develop a body of work, and how to identify trends or styles that influence how we both perceive and create our work.

Week 2  will continue with information on pricing your photographs, archival printing methods, creating limited editions, submitting to galleries and other ways to show your work.

This course is designed for those who want to take their photography to a higher level by considering dynamic content rather than technical skills.

 Fee: $150.00 + HST

Ages 16+

Note:  The class will run rain (unless it's a downpour!) or shine, and includes a moderate hike.  Dress for the weather and wear shoes suitable for rough trails.

We’ll look at new ways to photograph abstract patterns, and create impressionist effects. Through a short lecture, we’ll study compositional techniques and camera settings, then we’ll head outside for a field trip to practice.  The class finishes with a (gentle!) critique of your photographs.  Bring a tripod if possible, and dress for the weather….this is a “rain or shine” class, wet weather can work wonders on the landscape.  Suitable for all skill levels with tips for both beginner and advanced photographers.  Ages 16+,  or younger if accompanied by an adult.

Class size is limited to 12 participants - please register early to avoid disappointment.
