Workshop Calendar

Note: All classes are held in Fergus at 198 St. David St. N, unless otherwise specified.

Sylvia Galbraith is a popular photography instructor who teaches classes for beginner to advanced students in a number of locations in Fergus, Guelph and Kitchener.  She is an instructor for the Commercial Photography Certificate program at Conestoga College in Kitchener.  

Many of these classes are held at 198 St. David St. in downtown Fergus.  This large venue has the space for practical work during class time.  In addition to regular programming, private or semi-private lessons can be scheduled, and she offers programs for youth, either after school or on weekends.

Groups or camera clubs who would like to schedule a specific lecture or workshop are invited to contact Sylvia.  These can be held at her Fergus location, or at your own venue.

Registration policies:  Registrations can be made on-line or by phone...use the link under each course description.  Fees must be paid at the time of registration, either with Paypal, credit card, or by e-transfer to info@silvercreekphoto.ca.  For cancellations made more than one week before the start date, registrants will receive a full refund, minus a 20% administration fee.  For any cancellations received after this period and up until 24 hours before the course date, you will receive a credit towards another class.  No refunds or credits for cancellations within 24 hours of course start.


Conestoga College Photography Program

In 2011 I joined Conestoga College as an Associate Professor in the Commercial Photography Certificate Program and have worked on program development for most of the courses on offer.   I continue in that role at the Doon Campus in Kitchener, and also offer similar courses through my studio in Fergus (see below for information) More information on the Conestoga program can be found on the Conestoga College website

College level (CL) courses:  For those looking for more intensive photography training, I now offer 8-week courses that are based on my college-level classes.  These offer in-depth instruction for those wanting more challenging programming - serious hobbyists, those needing photographic skills for work, or who are are planning a career in photography.

onedaydslrCL_Photography Skills - Level 1... 8 weeks, starts Monday, January 20, 2020
 

Photography Skills - Level 1, 8 weeks .  7 to 10 pm
Mondays, January 20 to March 16, 2020 , includes a daytime (weekend) field trip, date TBA.

Note: No class Feb. 3/20

Location: 198 St. David St., Fergus                            Ages 16+

Suitable for:  dedicated amateur or hobbyist photographers, anyone who requires photographic skills for their profession, or for those looking to begin a career in photography.

This introductory level 8-week course will give you confidence with your DSLR to be able to shoot in any situation, and is the first step in gaining photography skills that can take you beyond the hobbyist or amateur level.  We'll cover everything from lenses to exposure settings, as well as lighting, file formats,  focus and much more.  Suitable for those with no experience.  You must have either a DSLR or advanced mirrorless camera.  Class size is limited to 10 participants.

Location: 198 St. David St., Fergus                           Ages 16+

 Suitable for:  dedicated amateur or hobbyist photographers, anyone who requires photographic skills for their profession, or for those looking to begin a career in photography, who already have an understanding of camera settings and concepts.

This 8-week program takes you beyond the skills learned in Level 1, and will expand on your knowledge of advanced metering & exposures,  lighting, composition, and more.  We'll work with off-camera flash, and explore the more creative aspects of photography.  Suitable for those who have basic camera skills.  It is highly recommended that you take Level 1 first.   Class size is limited to 10 participants.

photoshop2CL_Digital Imaging Level 1 - Photoshop  - Spring 2020 Dates TBA

This 8-week course is designed for photographers who are serious about learning the features of Photoshop CC to edit and enhance their images.  This course covers a broad range of topics, including image sizing for various outputs, workflow, colour corrections, black & white processes, retouching, selections, layers, printing and more.  Each night will allow hands-on practice time in addition to learning new material. Students are required to bring a laptop or computer with Adobe Photoshop CC installed, Mac or PC.  ( 2 available for use in class - additional course fee of $50).  Class size is limited to 8 participants.

General Interest Photography Courses

General interest (GI) courses: Designed for hobbyists, or those who prefer to study single topics, rather than register for a series of classes.  Many of these feature field trips and hands-on practice in studio, and are suitable for a variety of skill levels.


The Art of Black & White Photography - Fergus

Long considered a true art form, black & white photography presents its own unique challenges. This full day workshop will take you beyond simply flipping your image to greyscale...we'll look at choosing your subject, working with dramatic lighting (natural and artificial), dynamic range, assessing brightness levels, and much more. This workshop includes practical experience in the studio - we'll be photographing still lifes and portraits, so bring your camera.  We will also look at editing files, and examine the different options for converting files to black & white....bring a laptop (one is available for loan) for editing your files.

Private Photography & Photoshop Lessons - All ages

Don't have time for a scheduled class?  Have you bought a new camera and are looking for some tips to get you started?  Need some help with Photoshop or Lightroom?  Or is there a specific topic you're interested in...studio lighting, flash photography, portraits, or wedding photography?  If you don't see a workshop that suits your schedule or individual needs, consider taking a series of private lessons.  These can be scheduled during weekdays, evenings or weekends as time allows, and can be purchased as single 1 hour lessons, or you can purchase a block or 5 or 10 hours, to be used in sections that suit your schedule.
