New schedule - Fall 2019

Note: All classes are held in Fergus at STUDIOHERE, 198 St. David St. N, unless otherwise specified.

The Abstract Landscape - Elora Gorge Field Trip - Sat. July 20, 2019

abstractlandnewSaturday July 20, 2019 - 1:00 to 7:00 pm.

Locations: 198 St. David St., Fergus, and The Elora Gorge

Ages 16+

Note: The class will run rain (unless it's a downpour!)or shine, and includes a moderate hike. Dress for the weather and wear shoes suitable for woodland trails.

When we think of a landscape we often imagine grand vistas, with fields, rocks and trees placed within our scene in an orderly fashion, and a sunny sky overhead. But nature offers so much more....a shimmer on a pool of water, mossy patterns, contorted roots, or reflections that challenge our perspective. In this workshop we'll move beyond the usual landscape photograph, using advanced compositional theories and the limitations of the camera to capture these abstract glimpses of nature. You will learn how to use your camera for impressionist effects and discover that photo editing programs are not required for truly artistic photographs.

The course begins in my studio in Fergus, for a discussion on composition & design, and an examination of what the term landscape means. We'll then head to the Elora Gorge for a field trip, taking advantage of the late afternoon and evening light to practice. We'll finish up back in the studio with further discussion and a critique of our work. This class will run rain or shine - challenging weather offers its own opportunities for unusual subject matter.

Class size is limited to 12 participants - please register early to avoid disappointment.

Fee: $170.00 + HST

Register Online or call 519-787-7040 to register by phone or mail.

The Photograph as an Art Form - Fergus

artphoto2019 Dates TBA.

Location: 1
98 St. David St., Fergus

For ages 16+

Photography has a long history as an art form, but is one that is often misunderstood when considering it's place in the greater world of art.  How does it fit in when considered with painting or sculpture or other media?  How do we know when a photograph is simply a snapshot, or something more compelling?

This course is an excellent lead into the annual Contact Photography Festival held in Toronto in May 2019.

In this new course, we will examine these questions.  We'll look at the evolution of photography through different genres, and learn how to evaluate our own images in terms of artistic merit rather than as a purely technical endeavour.

Week 1  will include a discussion on photography's place in the art world and how it compares to other art forms.  We'll discuss how to develop a body of work, and how to identify trends or styles that influence how we both perceive and create our work.

Week 2  will continue with information on pricing your photographs, archival printing methods, creating limited editions, submitting to galleries and other ways to show your work.

This course is designed for those who want to take their photography to a higher level by considering dynamic content rather than technical skills.

 Fee: $150.00 + HST

Register Online or call 519-787-7040 to register by phone or mail.
